Ray Sonder and Saxon Gable grew up in sleepy beach towns on Australia’s east coast. Their parents were hippies and rockers. They were spoonfed Nirvana and The Beatles on the car radio whether they liked it or not.

Both began writing songs from an early age, evoking the rolling foothills and wild flotillas of the ancient Tweed Volcano and Gondwana rainforest that were their back yards.

By college, they were writing hazy, sunkissed demos to upload online and burn onto CDs for their friends. Inspired by technicolor, small-town beatniks and surfers, and the romantic soundtracks of their early youth, the foundations of Baby Smith were laid a long time ago. But neither Saxon nor Ray knew each other yet, despite likely crossing paths.

The pair each moved to Berlin separately to explore new subcultures, and write songs. They met, and soon married, spiritually united by their affection for the whimsical, intimate, deeply melodic sounds of 1960s psychedelia and 1990s Grunge. Several bands followed their creative union, experiments that led to the genesis of Baby Smith in 2022.

Since then, Ray and Saxon have locked themselves away in their East Berlin dungeon studio, writing, producing, and releasing EP I and EP II. So far, they’ve amassed 700k+ streams without a team or outside support.

Their debut album, Lately, Love is Dead, is a collection of their 10 favourite songs, cherry-picked from 200 demos from this prolific writing period. At its heart, the album reflects on a world where love feels endangered; in a global climate of indifference, division, and disconnection, Lately, Love is Dead mourns the loss of love in us all while still holding onto the possibility that it can be repaired.

Onstage, Baby Smith have toured their raucous, groovy, sometimes mourning live show to the UK, Germany, Ireland, and Australia. They’ve supported King Hannah, and played several festivals, including Waking Life (Portugal), Another Love Story (Ireland) and Atmosfera Festival (Slovakia), as well as countless other shindigs.

In a world saturated with noise, Baby Smith stand out as they plunge us into a raw, forever expanding galaxy of love, and its demise.
